Medvedev Heading to Italy To Pick Up Keys to Church

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano will hand over the keys on St. Nicholas' Day, a holiday honoring the saint, who is important in both Orthodox and Catholic traditions and whose relics are kept near the complex.

After conducting a prayer "For the Beginning of the Lofty Endeavor" in the Kremlin's Cathedral of the Annunciation, Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia conveyed good wishes to the newly sworn-in head of state.

MOSCOW TIMES: President Dmitry Medvedev on Saturday will stop in Bari, in southern Italy, where Italian President Giorgio Napolitano is expected to hand over the keys to a Russian Orthodox Church complex that has belonged to Italy for decades.

Italy first promised to give the complex to Russia in March 2007, during a visit of then-President Vladimir Putin.

The St. Nicholas Orthodox Church complex was the initiative of the Grand Duchess Yelizaveta Fyodorovna Romanova, constructed between 1913 and 1917 on funds donated by Tsar Nicholas II and other Orthodox pilgrims to Bari.

Russia Gloats Over Veto of NATO Plan

Moscow Times: Russia's ambassador to NATO said Wednesday that the alliance's decision to rule out near-term membership for Ukraine and Georgia shows that the U.S.-led military bloc is shying away from interfering with Russia's sphere of influence.

NATO foreign ministers, meanwhile, affirmed on Wednesday their support for U.S. plans to install anti-missile defenses in Europe despite Russia's opposition.

Western European countries led by Germany on Tuesday maintained a veto on membership road maps for the two former Soviet republics and succeeded in lifting a U.S.-driven freeze on NATO's ties with Russia.

Russia touts itself as 'anti-American' world power

Jim Brown - OneNewsNow
"I think it's to strategically distract the United States. I think it's a bit of payback for American warships which went into the Black Sea -- which Russia considers a Russian lake -- during the Georgian crisis a few months ago," he contends. "So I think that there's a lot of symbolism here in terms of this ship visit. I think it also says that Russia sees itself as a world power; it's not just a regional power."

MOSCOW (AP) - A Russian warship will sail through the Panama Canal this week for the first time since World War II, the navy announced Wednesday, pushing ahead with a symbolic projection of Moscow's power in a traditional U.S. zone of influence.
The destroyer Admiral Chabanenko will arrive Friday at a former U.S. naval base in Panama's Pacific port of Balboa for a six-day visit after carrying out joint maneuvers with the Venezuelan navy in the Caribbean Sea, navy spokesman Capt. Igor Dygalo said in a telephone interview.

Crisis will help us regain power - Russia's Communists

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's Communists expect the global financial crisis will cause social unrest and help them challenge for power, the party's leader said on Saturday.

Gennady Zyuganov told the party's annual congress the Communists should make maximum use of the growing public discontent caused by the economic downturn to try to restore their political strength.

"The wind of history is blowing in our sails again ... At this time of crisis the world of imperialism is starting to die. We are standing on the threshold of political and social shifts," Zyuganov said in a 2-hour speech opening the congress.
